Cruz Beckham and The Breakers in Paris

On Thursday, March 19, Cruz Beckham and his band, The Breakers, gave their first Parisian concert.

There is something particularly exhilarating about witnessing the first steps of an artist whose name carries a heavy weight, but whose ambition seems even greater. Last night, in the intimate, humid atmosphere of Le Pop-Up du Label, Cruz Beckham and his band, The Breakers, (Dan Ewins, Telmo Sexias and Dario Scotti), played in Paris for the very first time. No stadiums, no gimmicks: just a band and a small stage.

Opening the night was brand new singer Reece Bibby. Hailing from Manchester, he delivered a stripped-back accoustic set. He tapped in his family core memories and his conversations with himself and showcased his powerful vocals.

Cruz Beckham’s Paris Debut

It was a bold move. Out of the entire set, only three songs have been officially released: “Optics,” “Lick the Toad,” and “For Your Love.” The rest? A leap into the unknown for the audience, who discovered unreleased tracks yet to be dropped. You can feel a love for British pop-rock heritage in Cruz’s work. In fact, he dedicated a vibrant track to John Lennon before launching into a Beatles cover, confirming that his influences are rooted in the golden age of songwriting. The most "real" moment was undoubtedly his musical declaration of love to his girlfriend, Jackie Apostel, who watched him from the crowd. It was a moment of vulnerability that contrasted with the raw, almost nervous energy he channeled throughout the show. I’ll be honest, even though it was fun, a lot was happening on stage. The songs vary in style, and his discography isn’t quite a cohesive body of work just yet.

What made this concert memorable was precisely its rough around the edges quality. His youth shone through every movement and interaction. It wasn’t all perfect, but that was for the best. When a guitar decided to go out of tune mid-set, Cruz had to fill the silence, looking a bit embarrassed but smiling through it. It was a tender moment, topped off by a shout from David Beckham: “Yes Cruzie!” The cramped layout of the venue led to a rather funny scene during the encore. Unable to physically leave the stage, the band simply turned around and faced the wall, laughing, before starting again. After the show, Jackie Apostel shared some sweet insights about her partner. "He’s on stage to have fun! He loves it," she said.

Cruz Beckham and The Breakers: A Family Affair

Minutes before Cruz hit the stage, all eyes were on the stairs. Rumors were swirling through the room that David Beckham was somewhere backstage. Indeed, the former footballer was there in the crowd. The star, having come to support his son’s debut, spent the concert in a corner of the room, surrounded by bodyguards.

According to Jackie Apostel, Cruz Beckham has surrounded himself with friends for this first tour. The German-Brazilian handles the artistic direction for the band. “His cousin and his best friend are the ones taking the photos,” she noted.

While Cruz Beckham and his band are still finding their footing, their desire to do well is undeniable. We aren’t looking at a polished, icy marketing product, but a young man learning his craft the hard way, dealing with the unpredictability of live performance. It’s imperfect, it’s fresh, and it’s exactly what you expect from a first tour. In the end, what sticks with you isn’t a flawless vocal performance, but the authenticity of an artist finding himself—and clearly having the time of his life doing it.
